Enterococcus cecorum
Traditional treatment
ANTIBIOTICS
Curative
The most of the time penicillin’s are used against Enterococcus cecorum. Enterococcus cecorum is 100% susceptible for this kind of antibiotics. Two types of penicillin’s which are used are Phenoxypen and amoxycillin. A problem is that in approximately 60% of the cases the problem will return rapidly. Many flocks need to be treated several times with penicillin’s. (4)
Preventive
In the past Enterococcus cecorum was treated with Lincomycin-Spectinomycin during the first 3 to 4 days of life on a preventive basis. Lincomycin-Spectinomycin is a highly effective tool to reduce the problem up to 90%. Unfortunately, the mechanism of action is not known. Since the new laws related to antibiotics it is not allowed to use Lincomycin-Spectinomycin anymore. (4)
