Enterococcus cecorum
Alternative treatment
Finding alternative treatments for Enterococcus cecorum is difficult. There are two obstacles, which are the unknown infection model and the mechanism of the preventive Lincomycin-Spectinomycin is not known. What we know is that Enterococcus cecorum infection enters the chicken at the gastro-intestinal tract and that the best growing animals, often roosters, are affected. Which is characterized by a higher gastro-intestinal tract charge. Options for preventive measures can be found here.

Prebiofeed (prebiotica)
Prebiofeed is an insulin product which is extracted from chicory roots via diffusion. Prebiofeed is a mixture of poly- abd olisachharides. Monogastrics can metabolise this carbohidrate in the large intestine, but not in the stomach. Prebiofeed is fermented by the acidophylic flora. The products of this fermentation are the bacterial mass and the free fattu acids which are absorbed. Prebiofeed will selectively stimulate the growth of bifidobacteria, a bacteria which improves the immune system. (5,6) CloSTAT CloSTAT makes use of supressing the C. Perfringens bacteria to improve the intestinal health. CloSTAT contains the Bacillus Subtilus PB6 micro-organism which improves intestinal health. KeminÓ had discovered that chickens with this micro-organism had a good intestinal health and chickens that sufferen C. Perfringens lacked this micro-organism. (7,8) Allimax Allimax is a liquid feed additive in which the the working component is Allicine, an extract form garlic. Allicine has a bacteriostatic effect which means that the growth of bacteria is brought to a halt. Allicine does not kill bacteria but after removing allicine the growth rate of the bacteria is not as fast as it was before adding allicine/Allimax. Allicine reduces the bacterial growth via enzymes with a thiol-group and by blocking the synthesis of bacterial RNA. This makes Allicine a very efficient remedy for gram-positive as gram-negative bacteria. (9) Avi-MOS/Bio-MOS Avi-MOS is a prebiotic feed supplement in which Bio-MOS is combined with organic acids. Bio-MOS is a feed additive with a prebiotic effect which contains mannanoligoschhariden. Bio-MOS positively effects animal health, increase efficiency of feed intake, growth and chick quality. At the same time it has a positive effect on egg-quality, mass and the number of chicks per mother chicken. Organic acids are good remedies for acid intolerant bacteria like Escherichia coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter. They have a positive effect on the composition of the micro flora and they bind pathogens which prevent the pathogens of binding to the intestinal wall. (9,11) Calsporin Calsporin is within the EU registered as a feed additive for broilers in a concentration of 50 and 100 mg/kg food. Calsporin is a probioticum which exists out of viable spores of the bacteria Bacillus subtilis. Bacilus subtilis does not belong to the standard intestinal bacteria and is not able to multiply in the intestinal tract of chickens. By feeding enough Calsporin a healthy colony of Bacilus subtilis can be maintained which can positively influence the intestinal tract. (9,10) |
