Mastitis
Alternative treatment
The Bioveem project in the Netherlands did research on different alternative treatment on 17 farms. See 'the Bioveem project report', in Dutch and the 'Homeopathie Stalkaart bij koeien' (also in Dutch). Both Japanese mint oil and Tea tree oil are proved as good
treatments, both before and after milking. Herbs that are proved as good support
in mastitis (also in the Netherlands, found out in the Bioveem project) are
described in the table at the end of this chapter, extracts of these are used
in ready-made products are given in the table and texts below.

Doliso vet - Boiron
Homeopathic veterinary medicine for the prevention of mastitis. After milk removal apply contents of the injector to the affected quarter. Gently massage of the teat, so the injector will withdraw in the udder. Repeat treatment for a minimum of two days two times per day. Dolisovet is applicable against bacteria E. coli, Streptococci and Staphylococci in early stage of mastitis. Tea tree balm – De Tuinen Tea tree oil is an essential oil of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree. Tea tree oil is produced by steaming the leaves of the Australian tree; the oil has shown promising activity in the treatment of mastitis infections. The active ingredients in the oil are known as terpene alcohols. One of these, terpinen-4-ol, is effective in the destruction of many types of pathogenic micro-organisms, including different types of staphyloccoci bacteria. It also affects certain cells of the immune system that suppress production of natural compounds that cause inflammation. External application to the udder (not on open wounds) has a bactericidal effect. Mammicure 880 injector – Agrapharm Mammicurine 880 injection is a homeopathic veterinairy medicine, to treat acute and chronic mastitis. It reduces and maintains the bacteria levels below the maximum limit. It consists of a complex of 8 compounds with a reinforcing effect. Mammicurine works for the fight against mastitis. 10 ml per day is needed. Mammicurine contains several active substances. Calendula fights pathogens, Solanum and Echinea fight suppuration, Phytolacca helps to reduce inflammation and Solidago stimulates the excretion of harmful substances which are formed by bacteria. The active substances reinforce eachother and together they have a strong fever and mastitis controlling effect. Mintzalf Super - Cox agri Another natural product that contributes to good udder health is Japanese peppermint oil from the Mentha piperita plant. The oil has a cooling effect. Japanese peppermint oil is effective in early-stages of mastitis. It promotes blood flow to the inflamed quarter. This reduces the swelling and helps the immune system to fight inflammations. Mintzalf Super is used as udder care product. It contains 35% Japanese peppermint oil. It cleans the udder on the inside and it helps sending pain signals of the udder to the brains. This product also helps the blood circulation, which improves after a few days of using. This helps the health of the udder by a faster reduce of an inflammation or swelling of the udder. Mintzalf Super is easy and quick to use. At the first signs of mastitis, two times a day, possible both pre-milking and after milking. After every milking turn of the cow(s), 5-10 ml at the skin of the udder tissue. When the cow has hard teats/udder and is a high risk case for mastitis or an udder inflammation, Mintzalf Super is used. Pyrogenium - Ecostyle Pyrogenium is a homeopathic remedy (not registered medicine) is used in fever, mastitis, metritis, foot rot and others. The composition of Pyrogenium activates the production of white blood cells, causing the body to overcome the infection itself. Start Pyrogenium once the ignition is detected. Pyrogen is made by exposing pieces of lean beef in water to sunlight for 2-3 weeks until thoroughly decomposed. The resultant mixture is then broiled twice and potentised. Udder balm – Ecostyle Udder Balm is suitable for topical use in mastitis. Udder Balm contains no peppermint but eucalyptus, which promotes the blood flow to the udder. Waste is removed quickly and the healing process is stimulated. Used essential oils, arnica tincture and camphor work antiseptic and promote blood circulation. (20) |
